With a history as warm and unique as the products they sell, Schlemmer's has been a part of the Wabash community for over 110 years, spanning 5 generations of family ownership. Started in 1903 as an implement, harness and buggy business by John Schlemmer, he was soon joined by brothers Jacob, Clarence and George, making it a true family business. Throughout the years, other family members bought in (Byron and Sam in 1945, Jon in 1973) and a vast selection of products were added, including hardware, washers, dryers, refrigerators and, eventually the wood stoves and fireplaces for which they’re known today. HISTORY In September of 1971 Earl and Jim Smith opened for business in Rensselaer Indiana in the old F.O. Hershman John Deere building on Walnut Street as a Tractor Supply Franchise Store. We soon our grew our facility and moved to a new 10,000 sq. ft. building at our present location on the north side of Rensselaer in 1976. In 1978 another 5,000 sq. ft. was added to our building. June of 1981 saw another addition as Don and Earl Smith opened for business in the old Five Star Grocery in Knox Indiana. A 1,000 sq. ft. Radio Shack was opened inside of Smith Farm Store in Knox in 1991. In 2001 we saw yet another addition to our family; we purchased an Ace Hardware store in Plymouth Indiana. This store does by Smith's Ace Hardware and also Smith Farm Store. A year later there was yet another addition to the family; we opened out fourth store in Rochester Indiana. This store opened as a new store with 12,600 sq. ft. and they are busting at the seams. The latest addition came in December of 2006 when Don and Kim opened an internet store. Our first Christmas season was a success as our Internet store established new customers in 23 states and inquiries from as far away as Great Brittan. Our internet store has since grown and we are adding new things all the time. The internet store has been under going a lot of changes this past year in 2016 with its look and content. Smith Farm Store is truly a locally owned and operated company. All of the sons and the daughter of Earl Smith have worked in the stores at one time in their loves. The two sons worked for their father until the passing of Jim in 2009 and Don continues to run the family business today. [read more]
