In 2013, a group of animal loving volunteers recognized there was a greater need than what our area was able to offer. They came together to form an all volunteer group, and Midwest Pet Refuge was formed. In 2014 MPR was incorporated, and by 2015 MPR was officially determined a tax exempt 501(c)3 non profit with a full board of directors. We rely on volunteers, fosters, supporters, and donors to operate. As a completely volunteer run organization with no large scale facility, we have had to utilize the help of foster homes to house most of our animals in the past. We do not discriminate between fins, feathers, fur or even scales, and if we can help an animal on to a better life, we will! MPR tries hard to help any animal in need in some way, whether it be networking, transporting, needed vetting, fostering or even advice; however actual admissions are often limited due to space constraints. In 2016 the idea of Cat Tales Bookstore was born. It has been a wonderful resource for MPR. Cat Tales not only serves as a place the community can find excellent used books, but also as an adoption center for many of the cats we have available. John Hull started working in the farm equipment business in the year of 1896. John died in 1934 and in the same year, Norman Hull (John’s son) and Manuel Hull became partners. Norman Hull thus became the second generation in the business. Manuel Hull died in 1941 and Norman Hull became the sole owner of the company. In 1951 Richard Hull (Norman’s second oldest son) became the third generation in the business. Norman Hull Jr. (Norman’s youngest son, also known as “Buzz”) joined the business in 1960. Hull Brothers was incorporated in 1966. Norman Sr. died in 1974 and Richard and Buzz continued the corporation until their retirements.Fourth Generation (Buzz’s sons) Tom Hull and Bob Hull took over the business with Paul Evans (Richard’s son in law); Tom passed away in 2009. Shortly after, Tom’s wife Jill joined the business. In 2013 Paul and his family left the business and Buzz’s son Dave Hull joined the business with Bob and Jill. HISTORY In September of 1971 Earl and Jim Smith opened for business in Rensselaer Indiana in the old F.O. Hershman John Deere building on Walnut Street as a Tractor Supply Franchise Store. We soon our grew our facility and moved to a new 10,000 sq. ft. building at our present location on the north side of Rensselaer in 1976. In 1978 another 5,000 sq. ft. was added to our building. June of 1981 saw another addition as Don and Earl Smith opened for business in the old Five Star Grocery in Knox Indiana. A 1,000 sq. ft. Radio Shack was opened inside of Smith Farm Store in Knox in 1991. In 2001 we saw yet another addition to our family; we purchased an Ace Hardware store in Plymouth Indiana. This store does by Smith's Ace Hardware and also Smith Farm Store. A year later there was yet another addition to the family; we opened out fourth store in Rochester Indiana. This store opened as a new store with 12,600 sq. ft. and they are busting at the seams. The latest addition came in December of 2006 when Don and Kim opened an internet store. Our first Christmas season was a success as our Internet store established new customers in 23 states and inquiries from as far away as Great Brittan. Our internet store has since grown and we are adding new things all the time. The internet store has been under going a lot of changes this past year in 2016 with its look and content. Smith Farm Store is truly a locally owned and operated company. All of the sons and the daughter of Earl Smith have worked in the stores at one time in their loves. In the late 1980’s Karen Hoag and her husband adopted a single llama from a neighbor who could no longer care for it, and agreed to raise the llama on their small farm. From that moment on, over the years the couple became known in the area as a place to surrender wild and exotic animals that people no longer could care for properly. There were multiple reasons why the animals were surrendered, which still exist to this day. The reasons for surrendering wild and exotic animals range from the animal size, temperament, care involved, and many times lack of resources or adequate space. Originally named PARC (Professional Animal Retirement Center) in 2001, the organization became a nonprofit 501(c) 3, and was then named Black Pine Animal Sanctuary. Due to the number of animals and need for more space, in 2006 the Noble County 4H Club leased the current location to BPAS, and this is now the forever home to over 60 species of animals, reptiles, and birds. Black Pine Animal Sanctuary is one of the only multi species sanctuaries in the Midwest. The sanctuary includes an Avian Building, Primate House, and Reptile House, which are all climate controlled through the winter cold months. Our Story It started with one of those homebrew kits... Abby thought it would be a fun gift, a hobby perhaps, that Craig could enjoy so he wasn't so focused on work (a common problem among chefs). Well, it turns out Craig was pretty good at brewing beer (won an award within a year), and, since he was already a chef, it just made sense for him to combine his two passions. After a late night discussion of what they wanted to do when they grew up (they're in their forties, by the way), Craig said, "All I want to do is cook barbeque and brew my beer." A few days later Abby (who is from Goshen, IN) recalled the conversation over the phone with a hometown friend who said, "You're not going to believe this, but a place just like that is up for sale in Warsaw, Indiana." A message to the previous owner led to a plane ride (Fall of 2019, pre-Covid-19 when you could still do that and not wear a hazmat suit), which led to a visit of the building, which led to a trip home, which led to a SERIOUS LIFE-CHANGING DISCUSSION, which led to a offer of purchase. A few months and a one pandemic later, Craig and Abby packed up all their belongings (and kids, couldn't forget them), sold their house in Massachusetts, and moved to Warsaw, Indiana to begin what is now called Ledgeview Brewing Company. People ask us all the time where the name comes from. Well, the house we owned in Massachusetts was on Ledgeview Drive. When Craig started making his homebrew in the garage, he called it the Ledgeview Garage Brewery. Then, when we knew this move was really going to happen, we seriously considered using that specific name. We even thought about knocking out the south wall of the restaurant and installing a glass garage door that would open out to the patio. Then we saw how much that would cost. So yeah, no "Garage." So here we are, making some serious barbeque and getting ready to brew some amazing beer. If you can, please take the time to come and check us out after we open. We, along with our friends and family, have worked really hard to get the restaurant and brewery ready. That way, when you and your friends come to visit, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy.
