Early in 1958, John & Sarah Mast hurried to the home of their friends, Harley & Mary Miller, to tell them the small orchard in Nappanee would be coming up for sale. So excited to see the property, Harley & Mary hopped in John’s buggy and told them “there is no time to waste hitching up my horse---we need to see it now!” Shortly thereafter Harley & Mary would go on to purchase the orchard. In 1958, Miller’s Orchard was formed. A modest orchard situated within the city limits of Nappanee, Indiana. Over the next six decades, Harley & Mary would go on to perfect their famous homemade Amish Apple Butter™ and fresh pressed unpasteurized cider. If you knew them, you knew that their orchard was about much more than just the apples. Blanketed in a true servant’s heart, the two of them would go on to love, serve and quietly provide for their community. Now three generations later, we hope to carry on the legacy that they created in this community. In the late 1980’s Karen Hoag and her husband adopted a single llama from a neighbor who could no longer care for it, and agreed to raise the llama on their small farm. From that moment on, over the years the couple became known in the area as a place to surrender wild and exotic animals that people no longer could care for properly. There were multiple reasons why the animals were surrendered, which still exist to this day. The reasons for surrendering wild and exotic animals range from the animal size, temperament, care involved, and many times lack of resources or adequate space. Originally named PARC (Professional Animal Retirement Center) in 2001, the organization became a nonprofit 501(c) 3, and was then named Black Pine Animal Sanctuary. Due to the number of animals and need for more space, in 2006 the Noble County 4H Club leased the current location to BPAS, and this is now the forever home to over 60 species of animals, reptiles, and birds. Black Pine Animal Sanctuary is one of the only multi species sanctuaries in the Midwest. The sanctuary includes an Avian Building, Primate House, and Reptile House, which are all climate controlled through the winter cold months. In 2019, Black Pine Animal Sanctuary became accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, which assures the public that BPAS is a true sanctuary. Unlike many self-professed sanctuaries, and zoos, we do not buy, sell, breed or trade the animals at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary. Animals who now live at the sanctuary, have been surrendered or confiscated by legal authorities and will remain at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary, living peacefully and being well cared for, for the rest of their lives. Concannon's Pastry Shop was established in 1959 by J. Michael and Wanda Concannon on Charles Street in downtown Muncie, Indiana. In 1978 we built a new facility at 620 N. Walnut Street and moved in. Since then -- thanks to a great response from customers like you -- we have remodeled and added square footage at least four times at that location. In 1978, Michael T. Concannon purchased the business from his parents. Concannon's is truly a rare family business, with the third generation now heavily involved. Marc Concannon is a trained baker and oversees all candy, popcorn and coffee production. We have diversified the bakery to include our gourmet popcorns, our house-roasted coffees and our own line of fine chocolates. In 2009 we opened our Bakery Café at 4801 W. Baker Lane on the north side of Muncie. Like our original shop, it has been enlarged due to customer demand as well. Our Story It started with one of those homebrew kits... Abby thought it would be a fun gift, a hobby perhaps, that Craig could enjoy so he wasn't so focused on work (a common problem among chefs). Well, it turns out Craig was pretty good at brewing beer (won an award within a year), and, since he was already a chef, it just made sense for him to combine his two passions. After a late night discussion of what they wanted to do when they grew up (they're in their forties, by the way), Craig said, "All I want to do is cook barbeque and brew my beer." A few days later Abby (who is from Goshen, IN) recalled the conversation over the phone with a hometown friend who said, "You're not going to believe this, but a place just like that is up for sale in Warsaw, Indiana." A message to the previous owner led to a plane ride (Fall of 2019, pre-Covid-19 when you could still do that and not wear a hazmat suit), which led to a visit of the building, which led to a trip home, which led to a SERIOUS LIFE-CHANGING DISCUSSION, which led to a offer of purchase. A few months and a one pandemic later, Craig and Abby packed up all their belongings (and kids, couldn't forget them), sold their house in Massachusetts, and moved to Warsaw, Indiana to begin what is now called Ledgeview Brewing Company. People ask us all the time where the name comes from. Well, the house we owned in Massachusetts was on Ledgeview Drive. When Craig started making his homebrew in the garage, he called it the Ledgeview Garage Brewery. Then, when we knew this move was really going to happen, we seriously considered using that specific name. We even thought about knocking out the south wall of the restaurant and installing a glass garage door that would open out to the patio. Then we saw how much that would cost. So yeah, no "Garage." So here we are, making some serious barbeque and getting ready to brew some amazing beer. If you can, please take the time to come and check us out after we open. We, along with our friends and family, have worked really hard to get the restaurant and brewery ready. That way, when you and your friends come to visit, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy.
