In 2013, a group of animal loving volunteers recognized there was a greater need than what our area was able to offer. They came together to form an all volunteer group, and Midwest Pet Refuge was formed. In 2014 MPR was incorporated, and by 2015 MPR was officially determined a tax exempt 501(c)3 non profit with a full board of directors. We rely on volunteers, fosters, supporters, and donors to operate. As a completely volunteer run organization with no large scale facility, we have had to utilize the help of foster homes to house most of our animals in the past. We do not discriminate between fins, feathers, fur or even scales, and if we can help an animal on to a better life, we will! MPR tries hard to help any animal in need in some way, whether it be networking, transporting, needed vetting, fostering or even advice; however actual admissions are often limited due to space constraints. In 2016 the idea of Cat Tales Bookstore was born. It has been a wonderful resource for MPR. Cat Tales not only serves as a place the community can find excellent used books, but also as an adoption center for many of the cats we have available. John Hull started working in the farm equipment business in the year of 1896. John died in 1934 and in the same year, Norman Hull (John’s son) and Manuel Hull became partners. Norman Hull thus became the second generation in the business. Manuel Hull died in 1941 and Norman Hull became the sole owner of the company. In 1951 Richard Hull (Norman’s second oldest son) became the third generation in the business. Norman Hull Jr. (Norman’s youngest son, also known as “Buzz”) joined the business in 1960. Hull Brothers was incorporated in 1966. Norman Sr. died in 1974 and Richard and Buzz continued the corporation until their retirements.Fourth Generation (Buzz’s sons) Tom Hull and Bob Hull took over the business with Paul Evans (Richard’s son in law); Tom passed away in 2009. Gibson’s was started in 1940 by Earl & Mildred Gibson (Ann Sheridan’s mom & dad). Gibson Arena was originally constructed as an ice skating rink. They could convert to a roller skating rink when there was no ice on the floor. The rink was converted solely to roller skating in 1949. Back in the day when there was still an Ice Plant on the property they also produced what many locals still proclaim to be the best ice cream they ever consumed. George & Ann Sheridan purchased the rink in 1969 from Ann’s parents and continued the family owned tradition. In 1979, they purchased an additional skating rink in New Castle to expand the family fun. As time moved on and their children grew up, Beth married Mark Griffith and they continue to manage the New Castle rink. His great grandfather started his business in Muncie and expanded that business to Kokomo, Indiana and other parts of Central Indiana. His grandfather and father continued his business in Muncie, but he has expanded it again back to the Peru area along with the Kokomo area by partnering with Jackson Financial Group, LLC. In his combined offices, he partners with three other advisors with over 100 years in combined investment experience in order to give their clients suitable advice on how to help them meet their goals and objectives. His business is primarily focused on retirement planning and estate planning. Dr. Brian Topping received his Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology from Ball State University. He continued his education at Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis. Dr. Topping began practicing dentistry in 1998 and opened his own office in 2002, in Nappanee, Indiana. Dr. Topping believes in constantly improving his accreditation’s and education to maintain the highest level of care for his patients. Dr. Topping is a member of The Academy of General Dentistry, American Orthodontic Society, International Congress of Oral Implantology, Misch International Implant Institute, and the Nappanee Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Topping is also a strong believer in giving back to the community. He is on the Board of Directors for Faith Mission in Elkhart. Faith Mission is a homeless shelter, serving those underprivileged in Elkhart and the surrounding counties. He has also traveled to Mexico and Haiti on Dental Mission Trips. Dr. Topping is a member of the American Motorcycling Association and enjoys riding motorcycles with his son Grant. He is married to a “hometown” girl, Stephanie (Swihart) and they also have a daughter Arianna. Dr. Topping’s hobbies include rugby, hunting, fishing, water skiing, and any other outdoor activities. Dr. Swihart grew up in Wakarusa, Indiana and graduated from NorthWood High School. He went on to complete his Biology degree from Valparaiso University in 2006, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Swihart then received his doctorate from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 2010. He has had specialized training in Invisalign and Implants and is member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. In order to provide the highest quality of dentistry to his patients, Dr. Swihart takes many hours of continuing education. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Holly, son Brayson, and daughter Bailey. He also loves reading, working out, and watching Florida Gators Football and IU Basketball.
